The renowned Pakistani mountaineer Murad Sadpara has gone missing after successfully scaling Broad Peak, on Sunday. He fell after reaching the summit and lost all contact with his team.
Deputy Commissioner of Shigar, Waliullah Falahi, confirmed Sadpara’s disappearance and stated that Army Aviation has been contacted to help in the search and rescue efforts. Fellow climber Naila Kiani appealed on social media for the Pakistan Army to send a team from Skardu to the Broad Peak crampon point to bring Sadpara back and also requested to keep Murad in prayers for a safe return.
Murad Sadpara, known for his record-breaking climbs, was part of the team that recently recovered the body of a porter who died on K2 a year ago. The accident happened on Broad Peak, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, is considered one of the ‘safer’ eight-thousands, and stands at 8,047 meters (26,555 ft). Pakistan, home to five of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2 and Nanga Parbat, attracts climbers from around the world. In 2023, Gilgit Baltistan received more than 8900 foreign mountaineers in the summer season.
Another mountaineer Abid Sadpara also requested to pray for Murad’s safe return and rescue. He showed his disappointment on social media about the lack of response to their calls for aid.
