Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem sets up an Olympic record in the men’s javelin throw final event held in Paris Olympics 2024 and secured gold medal, thus becoming Pakistan’s first Olympic champion in 40 years. His gold medal is the Olympic medal in 32 years and bestowed the nation with honor.

The 6’3’’ man from Mian Chanu, Khanewal district has shattered the 118 years of record in Olympic history with 92.97 meters throw. Nadeem broke history and set a new Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m (305 feet) in his second attempt crashing the old record of 90.57 by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway in 2008.

He received a silver medal at the World Championship last year and also a gold in the Commonwealth games 2022 with a 90.18m throw.

Both the historic rivals from subcontinent, in the fields of sports also congratulated each other. Arshad Nadeem said, ‘I am happy to see Chopra earning silver medal’. ‘Nadeem threw really well. Congratulations to him and his country’, Neeraj Chopra. Chopra’s mother also appreciated Nadeem’s effort by saying he is also like our child.

He also revealed that he started his career from cricket.

 

“I was a cricketer, I played table tennis, and I also participated in athletics events. But my coach told me I have got a very good physique for the javelin throw and I concentrated on javelin only from 2016,” he said that his victory makes him remember his origin, village and motivates him to do better. ‘I had to go through very tough times to make it to this stage’.

He also said ‘not becoming a cricketer was the best thing that happened to me.’ ‘I would not be in the Olympics otherwise.’

Arshad extended his gratitude and said that he will celebrate Independence Day with gold medal.
